DISCRIMINATORY CLAIMS BY STUDIO AR - Studio AR / DHL NL falsely flagged me as “possibly on sanctions lists” because of my name and refused to deliver my order
I ordered a jacket from Studio AR in the Netherlands. DHL Netherlands then demanded that I upload a scan of my passport before they would deliver it — for a normal intra-EU shipment, where no customs or identity checks exist.
When I refused (GDPR violation, obviously), Studio AR first told me it must be phishing. Then they changed their story several times. Finally, they forwarded me a message from DHL NL claiming that my name may appear on “international sanctions lists,” so they “can’t legally deliver” the parcel without any proof.
For the record:
I am a German citizen, fully verified, with a German bank account and PayPal. Someone on a sanctions list cannot even open these accounts. The claim is absurd — and discriminatory.
Because I refused to upload a passport scan (again: illegal), DHL sent the package back. Studio AR refused to intervene, refused to challenge DHL, and simply tried to force a refund and close the case.
What actually happened is simple:
DHL’s internal system flagged my non-European name, and neither company bothered to verify anything. Instead, they treated me as if I were on a terrorism list — without evidence.
This is discriminatory, a GDPR violation, and a breach of EU consumer rights. I have escalated the issue to consumer protection and data protection authorities.
I STRONGLY WARN ANYONE WITH A NON-EUROPEAN or MIDDLE-EASTERN NAME to be cautious when ordering from Studio AR or dealing with DHL Netherlands.

As we have already been in contact and have kindly tried to explain the situation several times, we would like to clarify again that the refund was processed within one day after the return arrived at our warehouse.The identity check required by DHL is a legal requirement, so unfortunately this was something we had no control over, even though we would have loved to send the package to you. As you decided not to share your information, we of course respect that.
We are truly sorry to hear that our explanations did not come across as intended. Please know that we always do our very best to support our customers with care. We stayed in close contact throughout the process and tried everything we could to have the package delivered, but DHL sadly confirmed that this was not possible.
